When the rest of the world thinks about England, they most likely think of red phone boxes, the Queen, cups of tea and rain. They probably don’t think about wine. Oh, we Brits LOVE wine – we guzzle gallons of the stuff, I’m sure you know that. But we actually make it too. We MAKE it! And we make it pretty darn well.⁣

Recently, in a chat with ex-Dom Perignon and Cloudy Bay winemaker, Nick Lane, he said that the UK was the most exciting place to make wine in the world right now because it’s such a new industry and it has the unique opportunity to forge its own path. He could make wine anywhere in the world, but he’s choosing to make it in England! And it’s not just because its novel – we have the goods too. ⁣

The vineyards in the south of England sit at a latitude just a couple of degrees north of Champagne and the soils are made of the same stuff – chalk – because the land masses used to be connected. A cool climate provides grapes with killer acidity (perfect for sparkling – yay!) and warmer temperatures are meaning we’re now getting the ripeness too. Even the Champagne houses are eyeing up the English terroir: Taittinger have planted vines in here and Pommery have made an English cuvée!⁣

It’s not just award-winning sparkling wines we make here, either. We’ve got still whites, rosés and reds too. I know, I know – you might not believe me. It feels a bit like how some people still view English food. People still think we’re eating over-boiled cabbage with liver and onions, when we’ve got one of the world’s most incredible, diverse and delicious food scenes, with the Michelin stars to prove it.⁣

This week, you’re going to be seeing loads of English wine all over Instagram under the hashtag #BEWE. It’s the Big English Wine Easter and this Saturday between 7pm and 8pm, we’re going to be sharing pictures and videos of ourselves drinking our amazing English wines. Check it out! Grab a bottle! Climatic influences from the Pacific on one side and the Andes on the other have created the perfect terroir for grapevines, which have remained Phylloxera-free throughout history. These conditions make Chile the ideal place for low-intervention, organic wines too. ⁣

We’ll be tasting three totally different red wines: a Carménère (sustainable, vegan, hand picked, wild yeasts, old vines, low intervention and unfiltered!!), a sustainable Pinot Noir Reserva and a País & Moscatel Riserva, which is sustainable and vegan from a carbon neutral vineyard. ⁣

Brunello happens to be a real passion of Tom’s (Honest Grapes’ co-founder). Even though you’d be forgiven for thinking that Tom is passionate about every wine he talks about, it seems like Brunello really has his heart: “You can get disappointing Bordeaux and Burgundy, but never Brunello.”⁣

When I think of Chile, I think of colour, life and energy. All of these things shine through in the wines from there, making them absolutely ideal for springtime.⁣

This 2019 Reserva Syrah from Viña Leyda has both drinkability and oomph! It’s from Chile’s Leyda Valley, a place renowned for its cool climate winemaking. You’ve got those coastal breezes which keep the grapes aromatic and fresh, but also all of those hours of bright sunshine during the day, which ripens the plummy, dark berry fruits, making them taste full and juicy when you take a sip. Syrah is my favourite grape variety and this wine’s expression is smooth, fresh, a little on the savoury side (cool climate) with the lightest touch of pepper. Extremely approachable.⁣

Viña Leyda (@leydawines) is the leading winery in the region – it’s the most awarded coastal winery of Chile and their Chief Winemaker, Viviana Navarrete, was chosen as Tim Atkin MW’s 2020 Winemaker of the Year. You can taste the expertise in the glass: a restrained use oak provides structure and smokiness, making this wine a great match for spring lamb (I love the idea of shredded lamb tacos!) or chargrilled veg or even some barbecued fish with a tingle of spice.⁣

You can get your mitts on the Viña Leyda Reserva Syrah 2019 at the Co-op (@coopuk) and it’s on offer at the moment for £8 (it’s usually £10) until 6th April. Pretty perfect for an Easter treat (there are only so many chocolate eggs you can eat – and actually, I’d like to give this a go with some dark choc…!). Anne Poniatowski and Caroline Missoffe, two sisters, decided in 1995 to leave Paris and come back to the family vineyard, becoming the 4th generation at Mas de la Dame.⁣
⁣
This was quite the challenge for these two journalists (Anne specialised in finance and management and Caroline in fashion) who did not have experience in winemaking. However, what they did have was a solid knowledge of Burgundy wines, thanks to their grandfather who was originally from that part of France.⁣
⁣
Caroline decided to go back to school and follow a wine course in Dijon, while Anne focused on sales and new export markets.⁣
With the help of a consultant from the Rhône Valley (Jean-Luc Colombo) they made some drastic changes in the style of their family wines. It took some time but they also developed new “cuvées” by selecting the best vineyards of the domain.⁣

In 1999, Anne and Caroline decided to take the organic turn. Caroline is now the President of the AOC Les Baux-de-Provence and last year Anne was elected Mayor of Les Baux-de-Provence.⁣
